Home Air Conditioner FAQs
The average cost of repairing an air conditioner is $350. The usual price range is $160-$520, with the highest end of repairs reaching $2000. Certain AC repairs will also be more expensive than the ordinary remedy. Replacing an air compressor, for example, might cost anywhere from $1350 to $1800, while fixing a refrigerant leak will cost between $200 to $400.
If your air conditioner turns on and your thermostat is adjusted correctly, but your system still doesn't cool, it might be due to a filthy or blocked air filter. Pull your filter out and see if you can see through it as a test. When the filter is dirty it inhibits airflow to the evaporator coil, which can cause the coil to freeze. Be sure to change your filters at least once every three months, and more often if you have pets or family members with severe allergies.
If your air conditioner is still not cooling, you may have a compressor or refrigerant problem and will need to call a professional for AC repairs.
There are several ways to keep the indoor air quality of your home in top condition. Purifiers and other air-cleaning equipment work tirelessly to improve the quality of your indoor air. In addition to using an air purification system, you can keep the air in your home clean by dusting and vacuuming regularly, sweeping up pet hair at least once a week, and by opening your windows when the weather’s fine to remove stagnant air and let in fresh air.

Found equipment out on a float switch. Removed debris from pan and drain line. Also disassembled rubber slip coupling to gain access to the rest of the pipe. Flushed with water and draining. Removed water from secondary float switch. Estimate for 2-Iflo
Called out today due to odor coming from the mini split located in the daughters bedroom. I found bacterial growth and a mildew smell coming from the unit. I gave options for a one time cleaning and a permanent solution through uv sterilization. I removed the fins and cleaned the blower wheel and coil in place. Flushed drain line. Vacuumed drain from outdoor port. Measured the temperature drop across the coil. Equipment is clean and operating properly at this time. Thank you for always choosing Total Air!
Concern- no cool Cause - clogged drain line. Correction - I clean and clear drain line and drain pan with hot water and vacuum and ensure drain line is flowing also verify system cooling preference by taking all the necessary measurements. Recommendations- I-Flo customer agreed and sing quote.
Install part – float switch Upon arrival, homeowners asked me about a duct cover for their outdoor condensing unit. Unit is on first floor of a two-story patio with a screened in wall. I explained the risks/extra stress that this addition may put on their fan motor/compressor. Homeowners do not want to move forward with this addition today, just needed a price. Installed new primary flow switch. Noticed a small gap from air handler to supply Plenum. Sealed this gap with mastic tape.
Due to rain and wind, condenser units on roof we will have to come back to finish the maintenance. Notes: arrived for two system maintenance. Customer mentioned #1 main floor may need some refrigerant. Our membership program will save 20% off parts and include 2 check ups, 1 every 6 months. Summary: #1 air handler has some debris build up on the front draw Evap coil. A clean in place will remove some debris and help efficiency. #2 air handler has significant biological growth inside the cabinet. A UVC germicidal will mitigate biogrowth and produce higher indoor air quality. 3/28/2024. Inspected both roof units. Amana installed by Total Air and a Ruud installed by Island Aire. Refrigerant pressure and electrical components good on both units. Logged all units into service titan. Job complete. Collected 78 with Visa.
Performed maintenance on two Amana systems installed by Total Air in 2019. Cleared drain lines and replaced air filters. Replaced both client supplied low voltage UV lamps inside each indoor unit. Installed a Pure Air X UVC system into each supply plenum to control contamination and protect the home for 900 each. Electrical components and refrigerant levels good at this time. Both systems cooling well upon departure. Total 1800 paid with Visa. Job complete.
Pure Air Serial Numbers 0120123 - NLT218 - 9880 0011024 - NLT218 - 1134 Notes: returned to reseal plenum and immediate ducts for the upstairs unit. Once sealed I installed a pure air x in both air handler cabinets. Wiped down biogrowth inside cabinets and supply vents. 2 bedroom vents have some rust / biogrowth that is hard to get between the fins. Summary: both blower wheel assembly’s have some drywall dust. Once projects are completed I suggest a pull and clean on each unit. Performed a clean in place on both evaporator coils. Cleared and flushed both drain lines. Gathered delta t. Left both systems in the off position. Collected signatures and payment. This job has been completed. Thank you for choosing Total Air!
Notes: arrived for two system tuneup. Main floor unit condenser was not working. Found capacitor was bad and mushroom. Once replaced. The unit started right up. Performed full system on each unit. Waived today’s fee and this will be one of two maintenances for the year. Summary: the attic air handler has air leaks in the attic off the supply, and return Plenum and immediate ducts. I suggest properly ceiling to help with efficiency. Inside the cabinet has biological growth. It is also on the supply vents and outside the Plenum. A UVC germicidal will keep the cabinet clean and produce better. Indoor air quality. The downstairs safety float switch was wired wrong/cut. Customer agreed to replace switch and it is properly working now. Both systems are cooling and heating well at this time. I collected signatures and payment. This job has been completed. Thank you for choosing Total Air!
Perform a leak search on System A which is the main system for the house. Added 2 pounds of refrigerant to increase pressures and performed leak search on the indoor coil was giving a few readings on high side with the electronic leak detector but couldn’t pin point it with the low side, checked outside coil and components and didn’t get any readings, noticed coil deteriorating and accumulator is rusting at the bottom, went in the attic and checked the line set with the leak detector all the way to the corner of the house and didn’t get any readings, quoted to add Leak seal and 3 pounds of refrigerant as a band aid and hope it holds, did not charge for the 2 pounds of refrigerant I put in initially to perform the leak search, System is topped off at this time, if it continues to leak than due to conditions of the system rusting and having problems homeowner might move forward with a new system. We could do an isolation test and pressurize the system with nitrogen but that would cost mo
Preventative maintenance inspections. Checked blower motor operation and inspected evaporator coil condition. Checked safety float switch and inspected drain line. Cleaned vacuumed drain pan and drain line. Flushed drain line with water and primed drain line. Checked refrigerant levels and check test start up components. Unit is cooling well and drains properly. Condenser unit has good safety surge protector on condenser unit. Air handler unit is good uvc germicidal uvc light and is luminous. Installed new nest thermostat and set up app and WiFi. Customer has finished the update and nest thermostat is working properly. Thank you for choosing total air
I return to replace the thermostat wire, running to both systems with shielded communication wiring.
System be inside unit and outside unit was not running. Four codes were showing a communication error with the indoor blower motor and thermostat. I cycled power at the electrical panel to reset the unit. The unit restarted. Went back through the fault codes and showed that the history of default codes was communication error. Both system and system B currently has 18 gauge six wire install throughout with multiple spices. It is my recommendation to replace those wires with communicating wires as recommended by the manufacture.
I return to replace outdoor defrost fort. Picture has been uploaded to service titan showing that one of the two misters on the board burnt out which caused the short in the board.
The Schrader valve on the suction line was leaking refrigerant due to previous gauges being over tighten and damaging the valve. I replace the valve and refilled the system with 4 pounds of refrigerant. I let the system run for over an hour and the pressure is held.
After reinstalling the parts. I rediagnosed the original problem of low voltage short. I found a section of wire exiting the wall of the house next to the line set had a splice and portion of the wire was corroded and exposising bare wire. I stripped back the wire to expose clean wire and respliced a new wire running to condenser. System is running and has been running for 45 mins without interruption.
Replace UV Bulbs Upon arrival to the multi scheduled system maintenance, I was shown to the a/hs in the garage and c/us on the side of the home. I pulled off the panel door to inspect all electrical components connections, collect amp draw/voltage readings off electrical equipment, and check the unit for cleanliness. I inspected the evaporator coil and blower fan and both are free of biological growth and debris build up. The d/t temperature was within normal range for each system (20°). All electrical components were secure and within factory range. I tested the float safety switch and confirmed it is engaged when needed for each system. I then vacuumed the condensate drain line to remove and blockage or debris. I ensured this was draining properly. The c/u system refrigerant charge is within normal range for both systems and all electrical components are secure. I collected amp draw/voltage readings and the capacitor is low on both c/u’s Immediate needs: I strongly suggest repl
Warranty Air Handler Control Board. Returned to customer home to perform quoted work. Installed a new AH board,
Upon arrival customer told me AC was not run. Found low-voltage short with a contactor that was bad replace low-voltage short and contactor. after doing those repairs there’s still a short somewhere in a low-voltage wire cannot get it up and running no one lives at the home please call in the morning to do a schedule call back up. Prefer to have two people to chase wire and find a low-voltage short
Customer concerned about unit not cooling properly. Checked blower motor operation and inspected safety float switch and inspected drain line. Customer has approved for drain line cleaning. Cleaned vacuumed drain pan and drain line. Flushed drain line with water and primed drain line. Checked thermostat calibration and filter location. Customer has replaced filter. Unit is cooling well and drains at this time. Customer would like an estimate for relocate condenser unit to side wall with new aluminum wall rails for the condenser.
Issue that customer is expressing is that system struggles to keep temperature and runs continuously. He is a new homeowner as of the last three years. The home was built in 1989 and the duct is original. All of the R-value in the duct has significantly lowered due to compression, age, and how it was originally hung/connected. After inspecting the supply runs I have found multiple areas where the duct is saturated and a few areas where 70° air is dumping into an attic that is 114°F. I checked the pressures, amp draw, capacitance. The system is functioning and cooling to the best of its ability but it is losing efficiency in the ductwork. At this time my suggestion is to replace all of the duct for both units. Both attic spaces are wide open and easily accessible. Please set up Comfort advisor appointment
Upon arrival to system cleaning I was shown to a mini split head in the guest bedroom that needed a fan coil cleaning. Disassembled indoor unit and pulled out fan wheel and drain pan. Took all parts outside and cleaned with solution and a hose. Let everything sit out to dry and cleaned the evap coil. Reassembled system and cycled the unit in the cooling mode to test proper functions. System is now very clean, with a lot better air flow. System is back operating within range of factory specifications. Left the unit in the cooling mode, spoke to the homeowner about the work completed, collected payment/signatures and left. Job complete. Thank you for choosing Total Air!
Customer complaint no cool Upon arrival located condenser in back patio. Customer requested us to come back to diagnose the air handler. Upon arrival gained access to electrical section of the condenser. During inspection found the capacitor has failed (spoke with home owner, replaced faulty part) checked start up amperage. Took amperage of compressor and outdoor motor. Checked refrigerant levels. Will have to return to do complete diagnosis of the system. At this time customer said unit is blowing cold. Will return at a later date Thank you for choosing total air!
No cool. On arrival, condenser disconnect was removed from the wall with wires loose. The home owners siding guys removed the disconnect box before I arrived. The siding guys installed a new pull out disconnect and I looked it over for the home owner. The box is installed correctly, however we are responsible if any further issues with the disconnect as we did not install it.
We are incredibly grateful that you took the time out to leave us a 5-Star review.
