Residential Air Conditioner FAQs In Clearwater, FL
The typical cost of air conditioning repair ranges between $200 and $1,000, with the average homeowner spending roughly $350. Some more complicated repairs can cost as much as $2000, in which case your HVAC technician will discuss financing options with you; depending on your AC unit’s age, they may also recommend replacing the air conditioner rather than repairing it.
If your air conditioner is operating but not cooling your home, one possible cause is a clogged or obstructed condenser coil. When working properly, the condenser fan sucks air into the outside unit via the condenser coil, extracting heat energy from your home. Dirt, grass and other flying debris can build up between the fins and jam the coil. A dirty coil might result in decreased energy efficiency, a shortage of cold air from the registers or, in severe cases, a full system shutdown.
The best way to clean your indoor air is by installing a trusted air purification system. The best air purifiers are installed directly in your HVAC ductwork and clean your home’s indoor air as it is produced by your AC. In addition, you can help keep your home’s air clean by keeping up with your household chores. Regularly dusting, vacuuming and washing your sheets helps to remove the dust, pollen and pet dander that contribute to poor indoor air quality.

Air Conditioning Repair in Clearwater, FL
It gets pretty hot in Clearwater, so chances are at some point your home's AC unit will act up. For reliable air conditioning repair service, turn to the pros at Total Air. Our HVAC specialists will fix any air conditioner you've got, no matter the brand or age. Some common air conditioning problems we see in the Clearwater area include:
Refrigerant Leaks and Recharges
You'll notice a decrease in cooling performance, hissing sounds, or ice buildup on the evaporator coil.
Condenser Coil Cleaning
Watch out for reduced airflow, higher energy bills, or overheating of the outdoor unit.
Air Filter Replacement
You'll need to replace your air filter if you have reduced airflow, increased dust accumulation, or worsening indoor air quality.
Thermostat Issues
Facing inaccurate temperature readings, inconsistent cooling, or unresponsive thermostat controls? Most likely you're dealing with a thermostat issue.
Fan Motor Repairs
A very common repair, you will have unusual noises (grinding, screeching), poor airflow, or the fan not spinning.
Compressor Problems
Is your AC struggling to start, or you have warm air blowing from vents or frequent system restarts? You may have compressor concerns.
Evaporator Coil Cleaning
With dirty coils, you'll experience uneven cooling, inefficient cooling, or ice formation on the coil.
Drainage and Condensate Line Clearing
Keep an eye out for water leaks around the indoor unit, dampness, or a moldy smell.
If you are experiencing any of these issues, it's best to give Total Air a call as soon as possible so you're not left without cool air on a hot Florida summer day.
Air Conditioning Replacement and New System Installation
Often times it can be difficult to know whether you should pay for a repair or if you should replace the entire unit. Some signs that indicate it may be time for an AC installation service instead of an air conditioning repair include:
Age of the AC Unit
If your AC unit is 10-15 years old or more, it's likely nearing the end of its lifespan. Modern units are significantly more energy-efficient and cost-effective.
Frequent and Costly Repairs
When you're constantly dealing with costly repairs or breakdowns, it may be more economical to invest in a new, reliable AC unit rather than continuing to patch up an old system.
Declining Energy Efficiency
A significant increase in energy bills despite regular maintenance could indicate that your AC unit is losing its efficiency, especially if it's an older model.
Inconsistent Cooling or Heating
If your AC unit struggles to maintain a consistent and comfortable temperature throughout your home, it might be a sign of an aging or inefficient system.
Excessive Humidity Indoors
An aging AC unit might struggle to effectively dehumidify your home, resulting in a muggy and uncomfortable indoor environment.
While some of these may not seem serious at first, if left alone, they can cause you to experience unexpected breakdowns. If you are facing any of these issues and your AC unit is more than 10 years old, it may be more cost-effective to replace it with a new one. Our Clearwater air conditioning service technicians would be happy to discuss the age-old question of “repair or replace?” with you to decide which is best for your needs.

Residential HVAC Maintenance Plans in Clearwater, FL
One of the most important, yet most often forgotten air conditioning services we offer in Clearwater is preventative maintenance. Not only does this allow you the peace of mind that your AC will always be working efficiently, but you will be able to save money by fixing smaller parts as they wear down instead of dealing with giant repairs. Keeping your home cool during our hot summers can take up almost half of your monthly energy bills, so it makes sense to have that machine running as efficiently as possible.
A Clearwater air conditioning tune-up check includes:
- Inspect thermostat. We will ensure the set temperature matches the room’s actual temperature.
- Check electrical components. Issues with the electrical connections can cause the unit to be unsafe and prone to needing more expensive air conditioning services.
- Clean coils. The condenser and evaporator coils can get dirty which will increase your energy usage while reducing the AC unit’s ability to cool your home.
- Check filter. This is what keeps the air in your home clean and healthy for your family to breathe. How often it needs to be changed depends on many factors including outdoor allergens and if you have pets that shed. Our trained air conditioning service technicians will know exactly when it needs to be replaced.
- Review system controls. This ensures the unit shuts on and off when it is supposed to, and that everything is working correctly while it is cooling your Clearwater home.
We can create a custom maintenance plan for you, and if you become a Total Air Club Member you gain many benefits including semi-annual tune-ups, priority services, and discounted parts.

Came to perform a preventative maintenance. This air handler is in the attic it’s a 2014 train heat pump split system when I got here. The customer had a hose coming from the attic where she was siphoning out water into the shower because they left the float switch up so it system would run which overflowed into the secondary drain pan, cutting it off, this is a Tam TAM TRANE UNIT Which means that this unit is positively pressured which means you do not need a trap on this unit and this unit has a trap on it. You can’t remove the trap because the drain line goes underground and then pops up. I cleared the drain line and made sure that it was cooling properly checked all operations amp draws the filter sizes a 20 x 24 x 1 The run capacitor is a 45/7.5 µF run capacitor is well within range. The UV light is working. Their float switches both work because they had to prop one up by putting tape around the rim of it so it would not sit fully down in the float switch holder, allowing water t
