Should I repair or replace my home AC unit in Largo?

Deciding whether to repair or replace your home AC unit depends on several key considerations. First, evaluate the age of your unit; if it's approaching or past its expected lifespan (typically 10-15 years), replacement may be more cost-effective in the long run. Assess the cost of repairs – if they exceed 50% of the price of a new unit, replacement often makes sense. Consider energy efficiency; newer units are more efficient and can lead to long-term savings. Finally, factor in ongoing maintenance costs and the unit's reliability. A professional HVAC technician can provide valuable insights to make the best decision for your specific circumstances.

How much does it cost to install a new residential AC unit in Largo?

The cost of installing a new residential AC unit can vary widely based on multiple factors. On average, homeowners can expect to pay between $3,000 to $7,000 for the unit and installation. However, this cost can fluctuate based on factors such as the AC unit's size, efficiency rating, brand, and the complexity of the installation. Additional expenses may arise if ductwork modifications are required, or if a new thermostat is needed. It's essential to consult with HVAC professionals to get accurate estimates tailored to your specific needs and budget.

Why is my air conditioner running but not cooling my Largo home?

Airflow restrictions caused by a dirty or clogged air filter might lower cooling effectiveness. A leak or other problem may cause low refrigerant levels, which can also cause insufficient cooling. The AC unit may not accurately communicate with a broken thermostat. Condenser coils that are clogged or unclean, electrical faults or compressor problems can also reduce the cooling efficiency. These problems can be found and fixed with the use of routine maintenance and expert inspections, thereby restoring your AC's cooling capacity.

AT TOTAL AIR, WE OFFER:

We know that air conditioning repairs are never well-timed, that’s why we also offer our clients special financing plans with approved credit! When you need reliable services at a competitive and honest price, choose Total Air.

When Do I Need Largo AC Repair Service?

While we highly recommend regular inspections to catch any problems before they grow worse. There are also many additional signs and reasons that indicate the need for maintenance:

  • Electric bill increase. The cost of your monthly energy bill shouldn’t fluctuate drastically if you haven’t changed your habits recently. So when it does spike unexpectedly, you most likely only have your AC to blame. The fact of the matter is an inefficient AC has to run longer and harder and uses more energy to reach the same desired temperature as a more efficient one.
  • Temperature imbalance. If you have noticed that some rooms are warmer than others, or your home just isn’t cooling like it used to, it could be attributed to one of several potential problems with your AC. Low refrigerant levels, clogged filters, dirty ductwork, and old out of date systems are the most common causes of this symptom, and all necessitate professional air conditioning repairs.
  • The system is running constantly. Your HVAC system shouldn’t need to run at all times to keep your home at the right temperature. If it has always done this, you may have a unit that is too small for the air volume of your home, or your house might have inadequate insulation. If this is only a recent occurrence, you might have a coolant leak, malfunctioning compressor, or poor airflow caused by blocked ductwork.
  • Unpleasant Odors. When the unit first kicks on, it is common to have a slight smell leave the vents for the first few seconds, but if there is a constant burning or other unidentifiable smell, you need to call for air conditioning repairs.
  • Unusual sounds. You should never hear a banging, whirring, whining, or any other strange sounds coming from either inside the vents or from your outside compressor. This can be a sign of either a loose part(s), undue strain on the motor or excessive wear.
  • Your unit is more than 10 years old. Even if it is still keeping your home cool during the summer, if your AC is more than 10 years old, it needs to be replaced. These older models are far less efficient than their modern counterparts, costing you more money each month on your statement. If you are not yet ready for a replacement, at the very least, we recommend frequent air conditioner repairs and inspections to ensure it is still in proper working order. But remember that we also offer 100% financing on installations with approved credit!

Upon arrival, the system was in the off position. Turned the system on in cool mode & the OD fan motor wasn’t running but the compressor was. I verified the capacitor & hard start kit. Capacitor was completely drained & the hard start kit was reading 169mf.(weak to only run the compressor). Recommend a bandage repair to get the system running. Bandage repair does not guarantee further mechanical breakdowns. We still need to verify the compressor & condenser fan motors amp draws to see what is draining the starting components. Costly repairs that do not guarantee further mechanical breakdowns, we strongly recommend replacing the unit. Thank you for choosing Total Air… 04/02/24 Capacitor replacement no warranty repair performed today/comfort advisor scheduled for 04/19/24 after 5 pm. (Both homeowners will be home).

I returned to reprogram the indoor control board. Programming was successful. I advise the customer that his system most likely has a leak as his system was severely low on refrigerant. I did a brief check to see if there was anything quickly obvious and was not able to uncover a leak. I recharged the system with 7.3 pounds of refrigerant and comped it for the customer due to his troubles with scheduling. I would like to set up a return visit to come back and check the pressures in 3 to 4 weeks. Please reach out to customer to schedule in that timeframe. Please reschedule for last call for Monday. Board did not come programmed and needs to be programmed with uploader.

After arriving thermostat was lit and operational. However the inside nor the outside unit will turn on. I tried, jumping the system out at the thermostat wiring and the system still would not turn on. I then went up to the air handler and used a ECM motor tester to turn the motor on manually with the tester and the motor came on By doing so I bypassed the board inside the air handler. By performing test, it indicates that by bypassing the control board the control board is not operational. Control board needs to be replaced under warranty as well as the customer agreed to invest in search protector for both the indoor and outdoor unit

CA scheduled for 03/18/24 Monday @ 10am 03/17/24 - please see service history on November 2023 & todays repair taken for temporary air. (No guarantee) to credit repair amount to be determined by management. Today’s repair included adding 4lbs of r-410a to the system & a complementary leak search was performed valued at $128 today to determine where the leak was…. Pressures & temperatures readings indicated a refrigerant leak. Electronic leak search was performed and detected a leak in the evaporator coil. I also washed the outdoor coils & inspected the evaporator coils. Blocked lower evaporator coils detected & a dirty filter found. I replaced the filter & charged the system back to manufacture specs. With age, condition, and an extensive service repair history we strongly recommend replacing the unit. System is cooling with NO guarantee of the refrigerant leaking out. Costly refrigerant cycle repair outweighs replacement options. Thank you for choosing total air. Leak search Pinpoi

Customer mentioned system doesn’t seem to be cooling as well. Performed full system tuneup. Refrigerant levels were a bit low suction side and high super heat (piston). The subcool was within range. The blower assembly and Evap coil have debris build up. This can potentially cause low suction and air flow. Customer wanted to clean blower wheel and if it does not improve come back for Evap pull and clean. Once that is completed, further diagnosis may be needed. I also replaced a buzzing Contactor on the outdoor unit to help prevent premature breakdown. I collected signatures and payment. This job has been completed.

Upon arriving indoor and outdoor unit was not running. Thermostat was blank. I found a high voltage wire, going into the air handler. One leg of the wiring had burnt and separated. Additionally, 12 gauge wire was being utilized going from the disconnect to the AirHandler. The blower motor was over excessively impacted with growth as well as the interior of the cabinet. Customer decided to go with the Band-Aid repair option of replacing the high voltage wire and wish to forgo any type of cleaning or pure air. UV protection inside the unit as the customer is planning on purchasing a new unit by January 2025.

Quoted to perform a precision tune up and quoted to replace insulation foam by the outdoor unit initially, homeowner agreed. Homeowner showed me to the system in the garage and condenser unit is on the side of the house. I pulled off the panel door to the indoor unit and inspected all electrical components connections inside the air handler, collected amp draw and voltage readings off electrical equipment, and check the unit for cleanliness. The air handler unit has accumulated growth and will continue to get worse. Recommend installing a Germicidal Ultraviolet Light System to help keep the unit clean and produce better indoor air quality. The evaporator coil is starting to get dirty and blower fan wheel has started to get dirty. The temperature split is 19 degrees in cool mode and within normal range. Found run capacitor for

Upon arrival to quoted repair I was shown to an A/H unit located in the attic space that had a cracked drain pan. Drain pan needed to be replaced. Stored all refrigerant in the condenser outside and went back up to the air handling unit, cut the drain lines, cut both copper lines and pulled out old coil and drain pan. Spray the coil off with a hose, attached new drain pan and reinstalled into the air handling unit. Braised in the copper lines, reattached, the PVC condensate drains and pressure test the system to 400 psi. Pressure held very well with no leaks, but the system on a vacuum pump and vacuum down to below 500 µm. Started the system in the cooling mode, collected the temperature differential at the air handler and had a 22° delta T in the cooling mode at this time. Needed to add 1 pound Of refrigerant to get system back within range of spec. Treated the drain with the drain solve solution, and flushed with multiple gallons of water.
