A dirty air filter can cause your AC to not work properly. Clogged air filters can cause your unit to:
- Run without cooling - A clogged filter restricts airflow to your unit, essentially blocking outgoing humid air from flowing. Your unit will try to compensate by running more often but the air won’t feel as cool.
- Freeze up - A dirty air filter restricts the flow of cold air from the unit, causing it to build up in the AC and eventually freeze the coils.
- Lose efficiency - Units that are not functioning properly end up costing you money in added energy costs while also keeping your house at an uncomfortable temperature.
To learn more, call Total Air at 727-822-7700. One of our expert team members can help answer any question you may have on filters and air conditioning maintenance. We also offer an AC maintenance service to clean and check your system, helping it run smoothly and efficiently all year long.
You can use your HVAC to purify the air in your house from dust, leading to a healthier and cleaner environment, in the following ways:
- Increase filter’s MERV rating - Changing your air filter regularly is essential, but what can help even more is to improve the type of filter you install. All filters are given a MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating, with the higher the rating, the smaller the particles it will prevent from passing through the filter. With a higher MERV filter, you will have less dust in your home.
- Use your HVAC fan after cleaning - When you dust, particles are scattered into the air and can travel through your home, settling somewhere else. If you switch your system to ON instead of AUTO after dusting or vacuuming, the HVAC will help remove these scattered dust particles. Don’t forget to switch it back to AUTO after some time passes.

Horrible experience, misdiagnosed the problem, terrible attitude, disrespectful
Daniels - St. Petersburg, FL
Your technician was more concerned with selling a new unit, versus fixing my problem, after 5 minutes of checking compressor, air handler, he concluded because the unit is a 2007 it needed 4000.00 in repairs, in fact the only problem was a broken wire that controls the unit to switch from heat to cool, 0 dollar repair. His attitude and the way he talks to people needs serious adjustment, frankly for someone to come to my house, use profanity, and a genuine disconcern about my property, he's lucky I paid at all, and making a comment about if my Corvette has maintenance dates I would take care of that, which has nothing to do with why I called Total Air, I feel the 15 minutes he was here was a waste of my time and money. Also stating that it's owner's neglect, because I didn't follow through on by annual service, this guy never needs to come to anyone's home

Arrived at customer's house for leaking system. On arrival customer showed me to air handler unit.. Drain looked like it was putting pressure on the drain Pan. Water was leaking from the back of air handler unit. Went outside and trap was not on end of condensate line. Put trap on condensate line and shortened drain line coming from air handler so it would not put tension on the front of the drain Pan. Started off unit and unit continue to leak. Unit has a cracked drain Pan and I believe is incorrectly pitched. Customer would like an estimate to correct these errors. Customer decided to sign up for taps planned. Collected payment and signature and left. Customer happy. Unit is currently sitting at 39" from the floor in the front.
Customers condensate pump was broken. Gave customer price to replace and customer agreed to put in a new one. Replaced with new and ran unit. Condensate pump now working fine. Unit is operational. Customer happy with work performed. Customer not interested in plan at this point. Has an Uncle who does majority of work but currently has covid. Collected payment and signature and left. Customer happy.
Arrived at customer's house for leaking Duct work on supply side. On arrival customer brought me to air handler. Felt strong air coming from unit. Gave customer option to repair. customer approved. Sealed duct work with mastic tape and mastic paste. Ran unit it and made sure no air was coming out. Confirmed with home owner. Took pictures, collected signatures and payment and left. Customer happy.
Called out today as a second opinion to diagnose a bad compressor. The compressor is operating correctly. 6.2 amp draw and a capacitor that is within tolerance. There is no reason that this compressor needs to be replaced. Even when the compressor does go, we will be looking at system replacement instead of a large repair cost. Gave client a folder on our maintenance agreements. She has one more paid visit with Acree and then she will be switching to us. Equipment is operating properly at this time. Thank you for always choosing Total Air!
Upon arrival customer told me they had a contractor that kept the ACs running while he was she rockin. There is a lot of sheet rock dust in both AC units. The one AC unit is 25+ years old I recommend not pulling including that coil because it is deteriorating and falling apart. That’s for unit number two. Unit now. Unit number one is a lot of sawdust in the unit and recommend out and ultimate cleaning and the Pure air X. Customer wants a quote a 2 new unit. Customer would like the two pure air X installed when units are installed
Called out today to perform a precision tune up. Checked all electronics and motor components to ensure equipment is operating within manufacture specifications. Replaced filter and cleared drain line. Measured the temperature drop across the coil. Outside I cleaned the coil and ensured the drain was free of obstruction. Equipment is operating properly at this time. Thank you for always choosing Total Air!
Called out today to perform a precision tune up. Checked all electronics and motor components to ensure equipment is operating within manufacture specifications. Checked filter and cleared drain line. Measured the temperature drop across the coil. Outside I removed the fan from the condenser and cleaned the coil from the inside out. Removed all the debris from the bottom. Noticed that the contactor coil is heavily pitted and buzzing. Also brought the attention to the fact that there is no drain line safety. There is a float switch in the emergency pan but I would ran catch a clogged drain line before it fills the pan. Renewed membership, replaced contactor, and installed float switch. Equipment is operating properly at this time. Thank you for always choosing Total Air!
Arrived at customer's house for system tune up. On arrival customer showed me to air handler unit. Opened cabinet and air handler was clean. Under evaporator coil was also clean. System has multiple returns on the ceiling. Unit was producing proper Delta T. Next went outside to condenser. Hooked up gages and all pressures and readings were of acceptable range. Capacitor within acceptable range. Contactor sending proper voltage. System not over amping on startup. Sucked out drain line and got bits of drain jelly out. for the most part drain is clear. System checks out. Talked with customer about plan and benefits but customer Believes the system only needs one tune up a year and due to how young the system is she does not expect any problems.Collected payment and signature for work performed and left. Customer happy.
Arrived at customer's home to better inspect duct work. Home inspector had worries about some of the duct work. After inspecting what home inspector flagged as troublesome I confirmed there was no air leaking from those areas. Insulation have been pulled/bitten off by past rodent problems. As customers attempt to please home inspectors comcerns, customers would like duct work cconcerns, Properly patched all areas of concern that were photographed by home inspector. Showed customers picture and customers were pleased with work performed. Collected payment and signature and left. Customers happy.

Arrived at customer's house for system inspection. On arrival customer showed me to air handler units. After inspecting both units I noticed the downstairs unit, unit number 2, had a dead UV bulb inside. Upstairs bulb was past date but was still on. Explained to customer light is not effecting unit as it should. Customer would only like to change dead bulb at this time. Under both evaporator coils appear to be clean. Both units producing proper Delta t. Went to condensers and both units had proper pressure readings, contactors were working fine, and capacitors within acceptable range. Suggested a hard start kit for unit #1 but customer er uninterested at this time. Sucked out both drains. Collected payment and signatures and left. Customer happy
Called out today due to no cooling. Upon arrival system was running but there was no cool air being distributed. Checked refrigerant pressures and found that there is a large leak within the system. Client approved leak search and I found multiple leaks in the outdoor coil as shown in videos. Gave client options to inject easy seal (which is not a guaranteed fix due to the size of the leak) And options for coil replacement. The house is being inspected next week to sell and he would like to have it up and running by then. The office will reach out to the client with conformation of warranty and pricing for repairs. Thank you for always choosing Total Air
Called out today due to no cooling. Upon arrival system was tripped on the secondary pan float. Entire drain pan was filled with water and the backup drain was pointed directly into the pan. Meaning when the drain line gets backed up it will redirect water into the pan which we don’t want. There needs to be a float switch in the drain line to prevent water from getting into secondary pan. Educated client on the importance of annual maintenance. Signed the unit up for maintenance and will get back about the remaining 6 units. Cleared drain pan and flushed drain line. Will need to return tomorrow with portable vac. System is operating properly at this time. Thank you for always choosing Total Air!
Upon arrival customer told me AC was not running by air handler was. Went to the outdoor unit and it was on hard lockout. Pulled the disconnect from the unit and check the 40/5 capacitor was bad on both sides. Replaced with a turbo 200. For the contactor Pitting and recommend a surge protector and I installed them as well. Recommended a pure air x and customer Denied because she has to budget for it. Found a very dirt filter. Customer is picking 1 up.
Arrived at customers for no cool call. On arrival customer showed me to air handler unit. Air handler fan was running. Went out to condenser and condenser was not running. Tested capacitor and capacitor Was below acceptable range. Pointed out to customer and suggested change. Customer agreed to change out capacitor. Changee out capacitor and unit turned on. Went inside to check Delta team and delpaty was not of satisfactory range. Hooked up gages and compressor was still not on. Compressor is no good. Suggested to customers they get new unit due to age and condition. Customers would like consultation ASAP. We will get ahold of customer tomorrow when we open. Collected payment and signatures for today's work and left. Customer happy.
Arrived at customer's house for system not cooling efficiently. On arrival customers showed me to air handler unit. Air handler unit was clean. Unit was producing proper Delta T. All ducts were supplying good air. customer is mostly having a problem in the back bedroom. Back bedroom does not have a return, and I believe it's an addition to the house. Very narrow short attic. Definitely can not get to back bedroom. suggested Ductless split unit to customer. Customer is interested in Douctless split, and maybe transitioning house into Ductless split unit. Talked about options, performance, and output of unit. Customer would like to talk to her boyfriend tonight and will give us a call when she has decided what to do. Customer believes surges may have influenced unit to power down multiple times. Suggested surge protector and customer agreed. Installed surge protector. Customer happy. Collected payment and signature for work performed and left. Customer happy.
Called out today to perform a precision tuneup. Checked all electronics and motor components to ensure equipment is operating within manufacture specifications. Checked filters and cleared drain lines. Vacuumed clear from outside port. Measured the temperature drop across the coil. Outside I cleaned the condenser coil and checked refrigerant pressures. I noticed upstairs there was no float switch in the pvc. Educated client that we can prevent water from going into the pan by installing this safety net. Client approved repairs and I installed and tested the float switch. Renewed for another year. Equipment is operating properly at this time. Thank you for always choosing Total Air!
Arrived at customer's house for no cool call. On arrival customers air handler unit was frozen. placed towel under unit and ask customers to leave unit off. Talked to landlord and informed him we would have to come out tomorrow. Daughter is home, mother is down the road, no one here currently gets signatures from.
Called out today due to no cooling. Upon arrival system was running but not pumping cold air. The evaporator coil was completely caked with dirt and debris disrupting air flow. Both capacitors have failed due to manufacture specifications. The temperature on the refrigerant we’re near freezing at 38 degrees. Educated clients that typically systems freeze due to lack of airflow or a refrigerant leak. R22 is no longer manufactured but we can still get our hands on it at an astronomical price. All of these repairs can be made and still not guarantee the longevity of the system. This system is 30 years old and has pushed through many summers. Kyle will be out today to give options for replacement. Thank you for always choosing Total Air!
Outdoor fan motor. 8/9/22 Return to customers home to perform quote at work disconnected and installed new condenser fan motor. Installed mini turbo. Restored AC to home.Customer did not want to renew membership at this time he says he has till September and he wants to think about it.
Called out today due to no cooling. Upon arrival T4 Honeywell pro was in lockout due to the power surge. Called tech support and unlocked the thermostat with the password of 1234. System ran and is now cooling. Offered to go through the system to ensure everything was operating properly. Client declined because he does regular maintenance on the system himself as well as a maintenance visit occurred four months ago. Educated client about adding a surge protector to the condenser but he is having an electrician home out to install a whole home surge. Thank you for always choosing Total Air!
Upon arrival customer showed me an ac unit in the closet that needed tuned up. The evap coil is clean. Found microbial growth in air handler recommend a pure air x and customer Agree to having pure air done. Cleaned the condensate with solvent and shop vac. Checked the system for proper amps and volts. Went to the condenser and Checked the system for proper amps and volts. Customer game me a verbal agreement on the pure air. Will look at his calendar and call in to schedule. Delete card ending in 8840 and use card ending in 3901
Called out today due to no cooling. Upon arrival system was running but the compressor was not. Went outside and found that the capacitor has failed due to manufacture specifications and was not giving enough power for the compressor to run. Client approved repairs and I replace the capacitor. System is cooling but client is aware that it will take hours to cooing the house down to the low 70s. Will need to schedule maintenance visit to come out and take care of the system. System is operating properly at this time. Thank you for always choosing Total Air!
Called out today due to low cooling. Upon arrival client stated that the house would not go below 76 degrees. This isn’t the first time this has been an issue. Found that the system is low and clearly has a leak if we have already added refrigerant prior to today. Gave two different options. First would be easy seal to attempt to seal the leak. Informed client that we cannot guarantee that it holds due to us not knowing the extent of how large the leak is. Or the second option would to be to inject dye into the system and return tomorrow to perform leak search. Client chose to add dye and three pounds of 410A. System is currently cooling but we will return tomorrow to pinpoint leak. Thank you for always choosing Total Air!
