Residential Air Conditioner FAQs In Clearwater, FL

How much does it cost to repair an AC unit near Clearwater?

The typical cost of air conditioning repair ranges between $200 and $1,000, with the average homeowner spending roughly $350. Some more complicated repairs can cost as much as $2000, in which case your HVAC technician will discuss financing options with you; depending on your AC unit’s age, they may also recommend replacing the air conditioner rather than repairing it.

Why is my air conditioner running but not cooling my Clearwater home?

If your air conditioner is operating but not cooling your home, one possible cause is a clogged or obstructed condenser coil. When working properly, the condenser fan sucks air into the outside unit via the condenser coil, extracting heat energy from your home. Dirt, grass and other flying debris can build up between the fins and jam the coil. A dirty coil might result in decreased energy efficiency, a shortage of cold air from the registers or, in severe cases, a full system shutdown.

How do I clean the indoor air in my Clearwater home?

The best way to clean your indoor air is by installing a trusted air purification system. The best air purifiers are installed directly in your HVAC ductwork and clean your home’s indoor air as it is produced by your AC. In addition, you can help keep your home’s air clean by keeping up with your household chores. Regularly dusting, vacuuming and washing your sheets helps to remove the dust, pollen and pet dander that contribute to poor indoor air quality.

Air Conditioning Repair in Clearwater, FL

It gets pretty hot in Clearwater, so chances are at some point your home's AC unit will act up. For reliable air conditioning repair service, turn to the pros at Total Air. Our HVAC specialists will fix any air conditioner you've got, no matter the brand or age.

Some common air conditioning problems we see in the Clearwater area include:

Refrigerant Leaks and Recharges

You'll notice a decrease in cooling performance, hissing sounds, or ice buildup on the evaporator coil.

Condenser Coil Cleaning

Watch out for reduced airflow, higher energy bills, or overheating of the outdoor unit.

Air Filter Replacement

You'll need to replace your air filter if you have reduced airflow, increased dust accumulation, or worsening indoor air quality.

Thermostat Issues

Facing inaccurate temperature readings, inconsistent cooling, or unresponsive thermostat controls? Most likely you're dealing with a thermostat issue.

Fan Motor Repairs

A very common repair, you will have unusual noises (grinding, screeching), poor airflow, or the fan not spinning.

Compressor Problems

Is your AC struggling to start, or you have warm air blowing from vents or frequent system restarts? You may have compressor concerns.

Evaporator Coil Cleaning

With dirty coils, you'll experience uneven cooling, inefficient cooling, or ice formation on the coil.

Drainage and Condensate Line Clearing

Keep an eye out for water leaks around the indoor unit, dampness, or a moldy smell.

If you are experiencing any of these issues, it's best to give Total Air a call as soon as possible so you're not left without cool air on a hot Florida summer day.

Air Conditioning Replacement and New System Installation

Often times it can be difficult to know whether you should pay for a repair or if you should replace the entire unit. Some signs that indicate it may be time to replace your AC unit include:

Age of the AC Unit

If your AC unit is 10-15 years old or more, it's likely nearing the end of its lifespan. Modern units are significantly more energy-efficient and cost-effective.

Frequent and Costly Repairs

When you're constantly dealing with costly repairs or breakdowns, it may be more economical to invest in a new, reliable AC unit rather than continuing to patch up an old system.

Declining Energy Efficiency

A significant increase in energy bills despite regular maintenance could indicate that your AC unit is losing its efficiency, especially if it's an older model.

Inconsistent Cooling or Heating

If your AC unit struggles to maintain a consistent and comfortable temperature throughout your home, it might be a sign of an aging or inefficient system.

Excessive Humidity Indoors

An aging AC unit might struggle to effectively dehumidify your home, resulting in a muggy and uncomfortable indoor environment.

While some of these may not seem serious at first, if left alone, they can cause you to experience unexpected breakdowns. If you are facing any of these issues and your AC unit is more than 10 years old, it may be more cost-effective to replace it with a new one. Our Clearwater air conditioning service technicians would be happy to discuss the age-old question of “repair or replace?” with you to decide which is best for your needs.

Residential HVAC Maintenance Plans in Clearwater, FL

One of the most important, yet most often forgotten air conditioning services we offer in Clearwater is preventative maintenance. Not only does this allow you the peace of mind that your AC will always be working efficiently, but you will be able to save money by fixing smaller parts as they wear down instead of dealing with giant repairs. Keeping your home cool during our hot summers can take up almost half of your monthly energy bills, so it makes sense to have that machine running as efficiently as possible.

A standard Total Air maintenance check includes:

  • Inspect thermostat. We will ensure the set temperature matches the room’s actual temperature.
  • Check electrical components. Issues with the electrical connections can cause the unit to be unsafe and prone to needing more expensive air conditioning services.
  • Clean coils. The condenser and evaporator coils can get dirty which will increase your energy usage while reducing the AC unit’s ability to cool your home.
  • Check filter. This is what keeps the air in your home clean and healthy for your family to breathe. How often it needs to be changed depends on many factors including outdoor allergens and if you have pets that shed. Our trained air conditioning service technicians will know exactly when it needs to be replaced.
  • Review system controls. This ensures the unit shuts on and off when it is supposed to, and that everything is working correctly while it is cooling your Clearwater home.

We can create a custom maintenance plan for you, and if you become a Total Air Club Member you gain many benefits including semi-annual tune-ups, priority services, and discounted parts.

Called out today due to no cooling. Upon arrival the condenser fan motor would not turn on. Fan motor is seized. Capacitor is low. Evaporator coil is corroded and falling apart. There is corrosion in the condenser as well. This unit is past the end of it’s expected lifespan. Machine is out of manufacture warranty. Gave options for fan motor and capacitor replacement. Even after the motor is replaced there is a chance that there are additional issues with this machine. A comfort advisor will be out from 4-5 today to give options on machine replacement. Left disconnect pulled and turned indoor fan on to provide some comfort. Client declined preventative maintenance plan at this time. Thank you for always choosing Total Air!

Indoor fan motor has failed. Fan motor is moving very slowly causing the evaporator coil to freed up due to lack of proper airflow. Customer authorized to move forward with replacing the motor and wishes to give more thought for moving forward with cleaning of the blower wheel and evaporator coil and possibly a pure air UV light. Additional findings after installing the new blower motor, I started the system and ran it in cooling for 20 minutes and discovered that the system is slightly under charge by 2 to 3 pounds of refrigerant only achieving a 1.8° to 2° sub cooling when the manufacture requirement is 11° sub cooling. Called out today due to no cooling. Upon arrival system would not respond. Found that the float switch was tripped due to a clog in the primary pan. Gave options for a one time flush vs a preventative maintenance plan. Client enrolled in the preventative maintenance program and I waived the charge for flushing the drain. Performed first tune up today. Checked all electronics and motor components to ensure equipment is operating properly within manufacture specifications. Flushed drain line. Tested capacitors. Blower wheel and coil are clean. Measured the temperature drop across the coil. Outside I checked refrigerant pressures. Took amp draws. Removed the fan from the condenser and cleaned the coil from the inside out. Vacuumed drain line clear from outside port. Equipment is operating properly at this time. Client is aware that he has one remaining tune up before renewal. Thank you for always choosing Total Air!

I return to install 10 KW heat kit and also replaced TXV valve. I tested system in both heating and cooling and both work well. Upon arriving system was not heating I first found that the thermostat was wired incorrectly with the white wire being plugged into W/electric heat, when it should be plugged into a W-2 due to it being a heat pump. Also, the thermostat was program incorrectly. Additionally, the suction line pressure dropped to 15 psi‘s when operating in heat. However, when switching to cool mold, pressures operated normally. There is a restriction at the outdoor TXV, which needs to be replaced. Also, the heat sequencer was faulty. Customer approved repair items need it will be an outdoor TXV and a three stack heat sequencer.

Install the new evaporator coil/TXV to factory specifications. Tied in the systems, suction and discharge copper lines, rebuilt systems, primary condensate, drain line, and started the system in the cooling mode. Notice the system was extremely low on refrigerant. Added 5 pounds R410a to the system to get pressures within range factory specifications. Completed full system inspection, verified functions in both heating and cooling modes at indoor and outdoor units. At this time the system is producing a 21° delta T in the cooling mode, and the system was producing 94° in heating mode.
